HERRIMAN, Utah, Sept. 23, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — Herriman City police have arrested a 19-year-old man for investigation of multiple felonies after a Sunday night shooting that left one person with a shoulder injury.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at 11:30 p.m. They went to the Emerson Apartments, at 5605 W. Roe Deer Lane, in Herriman. Officers arrived and found a vehicle crashed into a fence by the pool.

“All occupants had fled the area. Three empty shell casings and one live round were found in the parking lot,” the report states.

“Shortly after officers arrived, a male and a female came to the scene and claimed to be in the vehicle that crashed,” the report continues.

The male and female told police they had been shot at by people in a white car. When officers asked if anyone else was in the vehicle with them, they named Alejandro Romero, the 19-year-old man who was later arrested.

Other witnesses told officers at the scene that they saw a male fleeing the scene on foot wearing a red shirt and white shorts. When officers located Romero, he was wearing clothing that matched that description.

“Alejandro claimed that he was at his brother’s girlfriend’s house and after leaving in a vehicle he was pursued by unknown people in a vehicle. That vehicle crashed into the back of the vehicle Alejandro was in, causing it to drive into the fence. Alejandro claimed he was afraid and ran from the scene.”

Romero said he did not know who fired the shots, and “stated no one in his vehicle had a weapon or fired shots.” Officers obtained consent to search Alejandro’s apartment but were unable to find a gun. The vehicle that Alejandro was in was impounded and a search warrant will be served at a later time to attempt to recover the gun.

Police dispatch received a call in Riverton that a male had been shot with a BB gun and his vehicle was damaged. Officers responded to Riverton and located that vehicle, “and found multiple bullet holes in it,” Romero’s affidavit says. They interviewed the driver and passenger of the car found in Riverton.

“The passenger had a wound in his shoulder which appeared to be shrapnel from the shots fired into the vehicle. Both the driver and the passenger identified Alejandro by name and description as the individual that shot at them.”

The vehicle found in Riverton was also seized for evidence processing, the police statement says.

Romero was booked into the Salt Lake County jail system for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury; three counts of felony discharge of a firearm with bodily injury; and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. All are listed as second-degree felonies.

If the case goes to trial, charges and their severity will be determined by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office.

“Based on the statements from the victims and the evidence on their vehicle Alejandro was arrested on multiple charges,” Romero’s affidavit says. “Alejandro is an illegal alien and would likely flee the area if released.”

The affidavit and news release did not mention any additional arrests at this time.

Herriman Police detectives are following up on additional leads, the police statement says. It also asks anyone with information on the incident to call police at 801-840-4000 and reference case number HR24-18737.
