LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, July 23, 2026 (Gephardt Daily) — A hiker who became separated Thursday from a partner and felt unsafe moving up or down on the south ridge of Mr. Superior, Little Cottonwood Canyon, was rescued by a search and rescue crew from the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Two friends started the hike at 6 a.m. Thursday, says a statement issued by the Sheriff’s SAR team. The two became separated, and one called for help shortly before noon .
“SAR was called for a cliffed out hiker,” it says.
“The hiker did not have any injuries but did not feel safe moving up or down. A SAR team began hiking up to meet the cliffed out hiker.
“At about the same time, the hiker felt that they could start making their way down the mountain, although SAR advised the hiker to stay put if they were not comfortable. The SAR team met up with the hiker near the Gazex and helped them hike the remainder of the way to the road.
All teams were off the mountain by 1:25 p.m.
“With the holiday weekend coming up, SAR would just like to remind recreators that the south ridge of Superior is not a beginner scramble. It is a difficult hike with substantial exposure and severe consequences. As with any route, please research it before you go and if a member of your party decides they are uncomfortable with the terrain, consider turning around together.”
