SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 28, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) – Police from multiple agencies are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting in downtown Salt Lake City.
The shooting happened about 4:10 p.m. Thursday at the Maverik gas station located near 500 E. 300 South.
A spokesman for the Salt Lake City PD said police were first called to a neighboring business with reports of a trespasser.
When police arrived, they encountered a man in or near the Maverik parking lot.
The man allegedly grabbed an officer’s baton and began beating him about the head.
Two other officers intervened and the assailant was shot and killed, but not before injuring a second policeman.
Both of the injured officers were transported to a nearby hospital where they’re reported in serious but stable condition.
SLCPD Police Chief Mike Brown tweeted Thursday evening: “Praying for the recovery of our officers in serious condition related to the officer-involved shooting incident. Thank you to SLC Fire and Gold Cross Ambulance and medical teams.”
The West Valley City Police Department has taken over the investigation.
Traffic in the immediate area was expected to be closed for several hours.
Gephardt Daily has a crew on the scene and will update the story as more information becomes available.
