VIERSEN, Germany, Feb. 23 (UPI) — The German division of candy maker Mars Inc. announced a safety recall of Mars, Snickers, Milky Way Minis and Celebrations products Tuesday.
The recall, affecting candies with “best by” dates between June 19, 2016 and Jan.8, 2017, came after a customer called Mars’ office in Viersen, Germany, to report he found a plastic particle in one product.
It is regarded as a Europe-wide recall, although Mars Inc. has not offered a list of affected countries.
“The affected bars were produced in the Netherlands and from there … distributed to several European countries,” said company spokesman Raoul Hamacher.
The Netherlands candy factory is in Veghel, and the affected chocolates were likely made in a four-week period, he added. Of the window of time expressed in the “best by” dates, Hamacher said, “We deliberately expanded the time span a bit to be on the safe side.”
Mars’ European headquarters is in Brussels and its products are made in two factories, in Veghel and in Slough, a suburb of London.
