Weekend Box Office: ‘Star Wars’ Crosses the $700 Million Mark Domestically

HOLLYWOOD, Jan. 4, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — It’s another record-breaking weekend at the box office as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” crosses over the $700 million line.

Experts are calculating that “Star Wars VII” pulled in an additional $88.3 million over the New Year’s weekend. The film is estimated to have generated $740.2 million in North America in just 17 days of release, making it the fastest film to cross $700 million domestically.

Internationally, the film is predicted to earn with an estimated $1.51 billion.

In second place, the Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” took in an estimated $29.0 million, bringing its domestic total to almost $93.7 million.

Third place belongs to “The Hateful Eight,” which opened in limited release last week at the number 10 slot. The Quentin Tarantino-directed film has a domestic grand total of $29.5 million its second week in release.

“Sisters” remained in fourth place taking in $12.5 million. Its domestic total is $61.7 million for the three weeks it’s been in theaters.

And rounding out the top five films for the New Year’s weekend is “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip.” The animated family film earned an additional $11.8 million, bringing its total take to $67.3 million its three-week run.
