For long an also ran to Netflix, Amazon has been playing catch-up, hoping to catch a break with made-for-the-Internet series like Alpha House, which hasn’t caught much attention, along with much of the older movies, TV shows and documentaries that Netflix has in its collection.

So which is the better service for your entertainment dollar–Amazon Prime or Netflix? Both cost around $100 a year.

Fellow USA TODAY tech columnist Ed Baig and I explore the topic in our weekend tech podcast, along with Eli Blumenthal.

Beyond Transparent, Amazon has received raves for its newest series, Mozart in the Jungle, which is set against the drama of a New York symphony. And it debuted several new pilots this week, under an unusual ordering process. Amazon throws it out to fans to help judge whether a show should be picked up or not.

The series include Mad Dogs, about a group of 40something guys in Belize, starring Michael Imperoli (The Sopranos) and Man in High Castle, a what if series about what the world would be like had we lost World War II.

Beyond content, of course, Amazon offers two-day shipping, music streaming and e-books with your yearly $99, along with the ability to rent on-demand movies if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the subscription offerings.

Beyond Amazon and Netflix, we also dive into what’s going on in the Apple Wars. A new patent issued this week for Apple suggests the iconic company could try to take on GoPro with an action camera of its own. Could Apple obliterate GoPro with its own brand?

And we look ahead to Wednesday’s preview at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington of the coming Windows 10.
