The Best Critic Slams the New ‘Annie’
(Barry Wetcher/Columbia Pictures)
It’s a hard knock life, guys. Well it is for Annie, at least.
The reboot of the children’s musical hits theaters Friday and so far critics are not super convinced that the sun will come out tomorrow (sorry, had to). The film currently has a low 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes. We rounded up the best slams of the movie musical. Get ready for a lot of Tomorrow and Hard Knock Life jokes. A lot of them.
USA TODAY’s own Claudia Puig:
“The 21st century Annie drowns out the character’s unflagging optimism with a disposable auto-tuned soundtrack and an off-putting blend of cynicism and schmaltz.” (Read the full review here.)

The Wall Street Journal:
“Where to begin in describing the awfulness of Annie?”
The New York Times:
“The cast would have been better served by a middle school production overseen by a creatively frustrated, inappropriately ambitious drama teacher than by this hacky, borderline-incompetent production…”
Entertainment Weekly:
“Aside from an unintentional homage to Zoolander that is so tone-deaf it’ll make you guffaw, Annie goes out of its way to make viewing it a hard-knock life…for us.”
The Associated Press:
“This Annie was supposed to be for a new generation. In the harsh light of 2014, it’s never looked so dated.”
The Hollywood Reporter:
“The sun’ll come out tomorrow, by which time this toxic mess should be forgotten.”
Newark Star-Ledger:
“Think you’ve got a hard-knock life? Try sitting through the new Annie.”
