WEYMOUTH, Mass., Feb. 27 (UPI) — Former Sha Na Na singer and saxophonist Lennie Baker has died in a Massachusetts hospital after developing an infection. He was 69.
His nephew, David Baker, confirmed his Wednesday death to The New York Times.
Lennie Baker played with the 1950s-style doo-wop group Sha Na Na for 30 years, starting in 1970 and ending with his retirement from touring in 2000.
He memorably sang lead vocals on “Blue Moon” when the band appeared as Johnny Casino and the Gamblers in the 1978 movie musical “Grease.”
Baker and his fellow musicians also starred in “Sha Na Na,” a comedy and variety television show that aired from 1977 to 1980.
