BOX ELDER COUNTY, Utah, July 31, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a motorcycle hit a car in Deweyville on Saturday evening, officials said.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:15 p.m. at the State Route 38 and State Route 102 junction in Deweyville, which is just east of Tremonton, said the Utah Highway Patrol in a news release.

The accident involved a 1998 Maroon Ford Taurus and a 2015 Black Harley Davidson motorcycle.

The motorcycle was southbound on SR-38, and was operated by Brett Thomas, 49, of Layton. His passenger was Heidi Thomas, 47, also of Layton.

According to UHP, the Ford Taurus was traveling northbound and began to make a left-hand turn in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle struck the right front corner of the Taurus.

Both occupants of the motorcycle were thrown off the bike and hit the car and roadway.

Heidi Thomas suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at Bear River Valley Hospital in Tremonton. Brett Thomas was initially transported to Bear River Valley Hospital and then was flown by helicopter in critical condition to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

The driver of the Ford Taurus was a 50-year-old man from Kearns. He and his 13-year-old son received minor injuries and were both treated and released at the scene, the release states.

The intersection was blocked for approximately two hours while the crash was investigated. It appears that both the driver and passenger on the motorcycle had helmets, but they were not full-head helmets.

The crash is still under investigation and will be screened with the Box Elder County Attorney’s Office at the completion of the investigation.
