FARMINGTON, Utah, March 1, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Two of the three people critically injured in a head-on collision Wednesday afternoon in Farmington have died.
The accident happened at 1:15 p.m. near the Glovers Lane intersection when a 91-year-old man drove his silver Volvo southbound in a northbound lane of Legacy Highway, according to information from the Utah Highway Patrol.
A white Chrysler was traveling northbound with traffic ahead. The traffic ahead swerved out of the way of the oncoming Volvo. The Chrysler and the Volvo struck head on.
“The injuries are very serious, however no one was pronounced dead on scene,” said the Utah Highway Patrol report.
“LifeFlight transported one patient. The northbound traffic on Legacy was closed for approximately 2 1/2 hours.”
Later that evening, UHP received information that wrong-way driver Donald R. Egginton, who was alone in his car, had died.
The passenger in the Chrysler, 36-year-old Epenesa Aetonu, from Samoa, has also died. The driver of the Chrysler is expected to survive.
All involved were wearing seat belts, the UHP statement said. The investigation into why the man drove the wrong direction on the highway is continuing.
