SANPETE COUNTY, Utah, May 4, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Three Utah teenagers were killed in a late night traffic accident in Sanpete County.

According to law enforcement sources, the teens, identified as an 18 year-old and two 16 year-olds, were fatally injured Friday about 9:20 p.m. when the passenger car they were in collided with the back of a flatbed truck on Power Plant Road outside Mt. Pleasant.

The Utah Highway Patrol said two people inside the flatbed, a 16-year-old male driver and a 14-year-old passenger survived the crash with minor injuries.

The victims inside the car have been identified as 18-year-old Ryan Lyman of Ephraim, 16-year-old Julie Oldroyd from Fountain Green and 16-year-old Kody Wheeler of Moroni.

The car’s driver was transported to the hospital for a head injury and was released, the UHP said.

Investigators said the accident happened when the car crested a hill and slammed into the back of the slower moving flatbed before bursting into flames.

The UHP believes speed played a role in the accident, but had yet to determine if other factors were involved.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
