OGDEN, Utah, June 27, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Ogden Police have identified a 4-year-old who died in an early morning fire caused by a butane torch he was playing with.

Police have identified the 4-year-old boy as Ryder Gaspa and his mother, who is still in critical condition, as 28-year-old Kimberly Gaspa.

Ogden police and firefighters were called to the scene of a burning home at 225 29th Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

“Responding officers evacuated the home but learned two occupants remained inside,” said Ogden police Lt. Nathan Cline. “Ogden fire personnel entered the home and located a 28-year-old female and 4-year-old boy unconscious inside.”

Both victims were taken to a local hospital where the 4-year old was pronounced dead. The 28-year-old woman suffered severe burns and remains in critical condition.

In a statement released late Sunday morning, Ogden City Fire Marshal Kevin Brown said he believed fire was caused by “the young boy who had been playing with a butane torch, which ignited a mattress inside the basement apartment of the home.”
