WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Jan. 8, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Two suspected truck thieves are in custody after leading West Valley City police on a rim-grinding chase early Tuesday morning.

WVCPD Lt. Todd Gray told Gephardt Daily the chase began when officers patrolling a mobile park at 3500 South 4200 West spotted a stolen truck towing a stolen trailer.

The officers followed at a distance while calling for back-up. Police were preparing an “arrest plan” according to Gray when the vehicle bolted.

The suspects led police on a chase all the way to 3210 South 6400 West when they ran over a set of road spikes officers had deployed.

At least 3 of the truck’s tires were blown, but the suspects kept driving, continuing for about 5 blocks before grinding the truck’s wheels to the rims.

The driver and passenger bailed from the car and attempted to run away before being caught by police.

Gray said the truck had been reported stolen in Salt Lake while the trailer had been swiped from West Valley City.

Drug paraphernalia along with a possible controlled substance was found inside truck, according to investigators.

The driver and passenger now face charges of being in possession of a stolen vehicle and evading police.
