NORTHERN UTAH, Dec. 26, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Avalanche Center has extended an avalanche warning into Wednesday for the mountains of Northern Utah including the Bear River Range, western Uintas and all the Wasatch range including Ogden, Provo, Salt Lake City and Park City.

The high avalanche danger developed Sunday night due to the snowfall, the Center said in a news release on Facebook.

The warning was expected to expire Tuesday, but has now been extended until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“The avalanche problems we face right now are some of the most unpredictable and dangerous avalanches type,” the news release said.

“Persistent slab avalanches are the kinds of conditions that lead to avalanche fatalities. Dry early season conditions have not only weakened our entire snowpack but have also made everyone’s lust for powder much stronger. These storms have put nearly 2 inches of water weight onto our weak and faceted snowpack. Avalanches are happening. We urge you to let the snow settle and stick to LOW ANGLE slopes away from steeper terrain.”

The news release said that anyone traveling in the mountains should get the proper avalanche rescue gear, and know how to use it, get avalanche training and get the avalanche forecast every day here or by calling 1-888-999-4019.
