SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Aug. 20, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — Edison Elementary was placed on lockout and part of Redwood Road was shut down in Salt Lake City due to a barricaded subject Tuesday morning.
The man has been identified at Timothy Gurule, 64, who was taken into custody without incident at approximately 9:30 a.m. Gurule will be transported to jail on outstanding felony drug and weapons warrants, as well as possible new charges.
The incident unfolded in the area of Eagle’s Landing Apartments at 625 S. Redwood Rd, Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman Detective Greg Wilking told Gephardt Daily, and northbound and southbound traffic was shut down between 500 South and 800 South on Redwood Road.
“Just before 8 a.m., a call came in about a person who is wanted on multiple active warrants who is barricaded in a home,” Wilking said. “We’ve had previous altercations and incidents at this residence.”
Edison Elementary was placed on a lockout, because the apartment building has some line of sight over to the building, but Wilking said there was no danger to students and staff at the school.
Wilking said there was no danger to the public because of the precautionary measures that were put in place. Police officers and their protective equipment, social workers, a crisis intervention team, a SWAT team and robots were all on scene, Wilking said.
It’s not clear if the man was armed but because of prior incidents involving him, police used an abundance of caution and treated the situation as if he was armed.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
