BLM Utah notes it’s No. 1 nationally in economic impact

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 11, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah office of the Federal Bureau of Land Management announced its economic impact on recreation in Utah tops the country.

BLM Utah generated nearly $2 billion in economic output through recreation in 2023, more than any other BLM office nationwide!” an agency news release says, adding its efforts supporting 16,521 recreation jobs..

“From supporting thousands of jobs, to billions in benefits, BLM Utah brings significant impacts to Utah’s economy. That impact is expanded thanks to many partnerships with the state, local governments, and nonprofit organizations who support our multiple use mission.”

Other highlights of the agency’s FY 2023 (Oct. 2022 – Sept. 2023) efforts is a total impact of $8.6 billion according to the That includes $5.4 billion regarding oil and gas production, supporting 19,954 jobs.

Grazing was impacted at $141 million, supporting 2,484 jobs. According to BLM.gov and news reports, the BLM manages more than 22 million acres in Utah, almost half of the state. The state is currently in the midst of a lawsuit filed in August seeking state control of virtually all of Utah’s BLM tracts.
