WEST JORDAN, UTAH – August 21, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – A construction crew cut through a four inch natural gas line Friday afternoon causing evacuations of over 20 people Friday afternoon.
According to West Jordan Fire Chief, Reed Scharman, dispatch received a call from the area of 7900 South Old Bingham Highway after crews working on pipeline in the roadway inadvertently hit the gas line.
Scharman said they evacuated nearly 20 residents from the condos in the area and they put the daycare in the area on alert. “We went into the daycare to make sure there was no natural gas already in the building then we locked all the windows and doors and kept everyone inside,” said Sharman.
Old Bingham Highway will be closed for quite some time Friday night as crews work to clear the area but the immediate threat is now over.
According to Tox Town high exposure to natural gas can cause loss of consciousness or even death. If the natural gas leak that has occurred and is severe enough, oxygen can be reduced, causing dizziness, fatigue, nausea, headache, and irregular breathing.
Exposure to low levels of natural gas is not harmful to your health.
