EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah, May 8, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — An Eagle Mountain family is mourning the loss of a pet goat that was fatally injured by a chunk of ice believed to have fallen from a passing jetliner.

Cassidy Lewis told Gephardt Daily it was about 9:30 a.m. Monday when she heard something hit the roof of her goat house, located outside the family’s North Grenada Lane home.

“At first, I didn’t know what it was. It was like a bomb or something,” Lewis said. “After it happened, all the animals were freaking out, and I didn’t really know what was going on.”

Lewis said once she was outside, she saw a gaping hole in the roof of the goat house and shattered ice strewn all around.

She could also see a stunned and injured goat, with blood on its face, lying inside the structure.

The goat ultimately had to be put down, Lewis said.

She called her sister, who lives next door, to try and help figure out what exactly happened. They shot video and took still photos which showed the splintered hole in the wooden roof and the shards of ice that were scattered everywhere.

A few minutes later they spoke to a neighbor, whose security camera was triggered by what they believe to be the sound of the ice smashing through the goat house roof.

“The security camera showed that it all happened at 9:29:58 a.m.”

A Gephardt Daily analysis of flight radar tracking taken at 9:30 a.m. Monday showed a commercial passenger jet out of Dallas-Ft.Worth, on its final approach to Salt Lake International flying above the North Grenada Lane neighborhood at the very same time.

The radar tracker indicated the flight was at an altitude of 15,309 feet.

Lewis said she called the Utah County Sheriff’s Office who said the neighborhood was in an airport flight path and, while they didn’t know for sure, it seemed likely the ice fell from a passing aircraft.

Gephardt Daily has reached out to the airline in question, but has yet to receive a reply.

Gephardt Daily has also contacted the Federal Aviation Administration for comment.
