ST. GEORGE, Utah, Jan. 13, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man had to be extricated, and he and a woman are in stable condition after a single-vehicle crash on southbound Interstate 15 near St. George on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:45 a.m. when a single vehicle pulling a full-size camper and secondary trailer containing a side by side lost control near mile marker 38, south of the Black Ridge/Ranch exit, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.
“Initial investigation indicates the vehicle pulled to the right and then overcorrected left, the news release said.
“The vehicle crossed the lanes of travel to the left and then the truck and camper rolled on to the passenger side. The side by side became detached from the vehicle and continued approximately 50 yards to the south in the median. Fortunately the concrete barrier performed as it was designed and prevented the side by side crossing into northbound traffic.”
The vehicle was occupied by a man who was driving, a woman passenger and two dogs. The man and woman were both wearing seat belts, the news release said, but the driver had to be extricated by fire and medical. Both occupants were transported in stable condition to area hospitals. The dogs were not injured.
“While the cause is under investigation, Utah Highway Patrol wants to remind drivers to be sure of the capabilities of their vehicles and themselves, that loads are correctly secured and vehicles and trailers are correctly connected,” the news release said.
“As always it’s important that drivers travel at speeds suitable for the vehicle they are in, the road they are on and the traffic they encounter.”
While there were heavy delays in the area due to temporary lane closures, the freeway is now fully open and traffic is flowing normally Sunday afternoon.
