SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, Nov. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman shot in the torso Friday afternoon has been upgraded from critical to stable condition, and her boyfriend has been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

South Salt Lake Police officers were called to the scene of 480 E. Stanley Ave. (3182 South) at 4 p.m. on reports of a possible shooting of a woman. When officers arrived, the victim was not on scene.

Soon after, police were notified of a female shooting victim’s arrival at a local hospital with two men.

Investigators went to the hospital and met with a woman, whom police originally said was 21, but who is in fact 22. Her name has not been released.

Her boyfriend and suspected shooter, who was found with her, is 22-year-old Victor E. Fonseca, of Salt Lake City.

According to a news release from Sgt. Gary Keller, SSLPD spokesman, Fonseca and the victim had gone to the South Salt Lake residence of her mother to pick up a cell phone.

“The mother was not home so the female victim decided to take an X-Box belonging to another (non-related) person in the household as collateral,” the news release says. “The male owner of the X-Box objected and blocked the female (victim) from leaving with his property and an argument ensued.

“The boyfriend (suspect), 22 year-old Victor E. Fonseca who was standing outside the apartment pulled out a handgun and fired two shots. One bullet hit the ground and the second bullet hit his girlfriend in the upper torso. The male owner of the X-Box, his 14-year-old daughter and one or two other men were in the apartment during the gunfire; they were not injured or harmed.”

Fonesca was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on preliminary charges of one count of aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; one count of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony; one count of aggravated assault, a second-degree felony; two counts of discharge of a firearm by a restricted person, third-degree felonies; and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, a third-degree felony.

Fonseca has not yet been formally charged by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office, which will be screening the case.

The handgun used in the shooting has not been recovered.
