KEARNS, Utah, Feb. 6, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — A Kearns residence that was engulfed when fire officials arrived appears to be a total loss.

Brian Anderton, Unified Fire Authority battalion chief, said a call came in at 4:53 p.m. Saturday of a fire in the area of 4500 West and 4900 South.

Crews arrived to find the structure “heavily engulfed,” Anderton said.

The residence was home to an elderly couple and their adult son, according to reports. The couple was out at the time of the fire, and the son was able to get out of the house, without injuries, before fire crews arrived.

Anderton said the home appears to be a total loss. The Red Cross was on scene to help residents make arrangements for a place to stay for the night.

Investigators said Saturday evening on the Unified Fire Authority’s Twitter page that the fire appears to have started near a fireplace.
