LAVERKIN, Utah, May 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police arrested a man who fled in a blazing car after a fire at a LaVerkin Maverik which spread to a gas pump.

A call came into dispatch at approximately 8:35 p.m. Friday about a vehicle fire at the gas station, at 460 N. State St., according to a news release on Facebook from LaVerkin City Police.

“Two off-duty officers were in the area and heard what appeared to be an explosion,” the news release said. “There was a large item in the parking lot fully engulfed. A vehicle drove through the pump knocking it off the base and pushed it into the middle of the parking lot. The pump was on fire along with the vehicle.”

A vehicle on fire was also seen fleeing the scene, the news release said.

LaVerkin police officers, Washington County deputies and Hurricane Fire and Rescue responded to the area.

“A witness was able to follow the fleeing vehicle and update dispatchers with its location,” the news release said. “A Springdale officer was able to stop the vehicle and detain the occupants.”

The driver was arrested and the passenger was issued a citation. Police suspect the occupants may have been under the influence of inhalants.

“This incident was concluded without further incident largely due to the cooperation between local law enforcement, fire and rescue and witnesses,” the news release concluded.

Officials did not say whether the fire was set deliberately.
