WEST JORDAN, UTAH – October 6, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — A former Utah bus driver found guilty of 19 of 33 felony counts related to aggravated sex abuse of a child will has been sentenced to serve 15 years to life in prison. Judge L. Douglas Hogan ordered the terms to run concurrently, rather than consecutively.

A jury found John Carrell guilty in July of the felony counts related to aggravated sex abuse of two five-year-old special needs students.

Prosecutors said Carrell repeatedly sexually abused the two girls after driving them to Altara Elementary School in Sandy. The alleged offenses took place in March and April 2014. Prosecutors argued surveillance video taken from the school showed Carrell touching the girls inappropriately.

Carrell maintained his innocence; his attorney said the surveillance video bus did not show enough to convict his client.

Carrell was put on leave from Canyons School District after the allegations surfaced. He later resigned.
