SANDY, Utah, July 27, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A wanted fugitive with a long criminal history is back behind bars after a late night police chase which ended in a crash in a Sandy neighborhood Friday night.

Supervising U.S. Deputy Marshall Derryl Spencer, commander of the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Task Force (V-FAST) told Gephardt Daily undercover officers had been on the lookout for Corey Bertlesen, 45, an ex-con wanted on weapons and drug charges.

Spencer said V-FAST had received a tip that Bertlesen, known as a “frequent flier” for his habit of fleeing police, was planning on being in Riverton Thursday night.

Undercover units fanned out across the area before spotting Bertlesen’s vehicle about 11 p.m.

When officers tried to pull him over, Burtlesen lived up to his “frequent flier” reputation, leading police on a quick chase before slamming into fence and into a resident’s yard.

Investigators say Bertlesen stumbled and fell while trying to scale the fence. He then told officers he wished he’d been in a position where police eventually had to shoot him

“He’s in a bad place right now,” Spencer said.

Bertlesen was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail where he faces charges including possession of a dangerous weapon and distribution of a controlled substance.
