LEHI, Utah, Aug. 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Lehi City Police Department has acquired a new K-9, to be partnered with a new handler. Both are expected to be certified and on the streets by early October.
The new K-9 is Hawk, a 14-month-old Belgian Malinois. The handler in training is Zack Fossum, recently assigned to the K-9 Unit from the Investigations Division.
“The addition of this dog will make it possible to have a K-9 on duty on every shift, minus training and vacation days,” says a post on the Lehi City Police Department Facebook page.
“We believe that this will be a tremendous benefit to the department and the citizens as the K-9s have proven their value in not only detecting illegal narcotics but also keeping officers and citizens safer.”
Hawk was acquired from Right Hand K-9, a Davis County business from which all of the LCPD’s dogs have been purchased, the post says. Right Hand K-9 dogs come from a kennel in the Czech Republic.
Fossum was allowed to help in the selection of his new K-9 partner, the post says.
