LAYTON, Utah, March 8, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — More than 30 firefighters battled a blaze at a home in Layton Monday evening, officials said.
Layton Fire Department spokesman Doug Bitten said crews were dispatched to a structure fire at 1414 E. 275 North at approximately 6:30 p.m. The homeowner had called 911 reporting that the basement bedroom in the home was on fire.
Bitten said in a news release: “The 911 dispatchers instructed all the occupants to evacuate. When fire crews arrived, they saw smoke venting from the home basement window and occupants out front of the home.
“Firefighters quickly suppressed flames near a corner of a basement bedroom. The fire didn’t extend out of the bedroom but did smoke damage much of the contents within this room, and a wood panel wall.
“One adult male occupant tried to open the door to the room but was overcome by smoke and heat.”
Bitton said the home has five occupants: three adults and two children. The man sustained smoke inhalation and singed hair; he was treated at the scene and refused transport. No one else was injured in the incident.
The Red Cross responded to offer relocation services. The fire damage is estimated to be approximately $15,000.
Bitton said the family was very lucky to be home and quickly report the fire.
“The room was only seconds away to extending to interior walls and heat up the whole room to total fire involvement,” he said.
