SALT LAKE CITY, Utah April 29, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is reassigning more than two dozen volunteers working in Turkey citing growing safety concerns.

According to a statement released Sunday by church spokesman Daniel Woodruff,  the volunteers are being moved due to growing political unrest in Turkey and throughout the region.

Due to a prolonged period of heightened political tensions in Turkey, all of our volunteers serving in that country have been temporarily reassigned. This includes 20 young men, four young women, and five  senior couples. They will be temporarily reassigned to other regions in Europe, Asia, and North America. Additionally, four volunteers who are nearing the end of their service will return home. The safety of our volunteers is a primary concern for the Church, and we work diligently to monitor conditions and make adjustments as needed in an effort to promote their safety.

The statement follows a previous announcement by the LDS Church that their Bulgaria Sophia Mission would be combined with the Central Eurasia Mission to form the Bulgaria/Central Eurasia Mission, to be headquartered in Sofia, Bulgaria.

According to the church statement, Turkey will remain part of that mission.
