LITTLE COTTONWOOD CANYON, Utah, Aug. 7, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Rescue crews responded to the Gate Buttress, a popular climbing area in Little Cottonwood Canyon, where a man fell more than 30 feet Saturday evening and remained there until he was found by hikers Sunday morning.
The victim reportedly told those who found him that he had hurt himself in a series of falls, the largest one about 30 feet. The 43-year-old man was reportedly dehydrated as well.
The man, whose identity has not been released, decided he couldn’t hike out in the dark, said Lt. Todd Griffiths of the Unified Police Department. In the morning, Griffiths said, the man realized that he couldn’t walk out because of lacerations to his legs.
The Unified Police Department and search and rescue crews reached the man at about 4 p.m. Sunday. He had no broken bones, Griffiths said.
Rescue crews were able to hike the man out about three-fourths of the way and were looking for a spot for a medical helicopter to land to transport him to a hospital. Griffiths said they expected to have him flown out by 8:30 p.m. or earlier.
