Man injured in Cedar City officer-involved shooting

CEDAR CITY, Utah, Sept. 30, 2021 (Gephardt Daily) — A 40-year-old man was injured in an officer-involved shooting in Cedar City Thursday morning.

The man has been identified as Brian Peters, 40, said a news release from Cedar City Police Department.

“Around 11:30 a.m., officers from the Cedar City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired at the 4200 West block of 375 North,” the news release said. “Initial information reported was a male subject had intentionally fired a handgun towards people inside the home.”

Officers arrived on scene before the suspect fired additional shots from a firearm.

“Mr. Peters then emerged from the home and presented a threat to officers,” the news release said. “Shots were fired before Mr. Peters was taken into custody.”

Peters suffered injuries and was transported to Cedar City Hospital for medical care. Officials did not give Peters’ condition. No additional injuries to other persons were reported.

Homes in the immediate area were evacuated and a nearby elementary school was placed on lockdown during the incident. Vehicle traffic on State Route 56 was also stopped for a time.

“The motive for this shooting is unknown at this time,” the news release said. “This is an active investigation conducted by the Iron/Garfield/Beaver Counties Critical Incident Task Force. Additional information will be forthcoming as it becomes available.”
