SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 4, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski has fired the city’s 911 director, Scott Freitag, effective immediately, following news of Freitag’s arrest Wednesday for drunken driving.

“There is no acceptable reason for anyone to put innocent lives in danger by getting behind the wheel of a car while intoxicated, especially an individual leading a critical public safety agency,” Biskupski said in a prepared statement.

“While I am angry and disappointed in Scott’s behavior, I do hope he gets help to address his problems, and that he finds the support of loved ones that he needs at this time.”

Freitag, 48, was pulled over at 1:25 p.m. in Kaysville by a Centerville Police Department officer.

“Freitag was driving a Salt Lake City Corporation vehicle with exempt plates,” a news release from the Centerville Police Department says. “The sergeant noticed the vehicle being driven in an erratic manner and made a traffic stop on I-15 southbound at the rest stop in Kaysville.

“The sergeant conducted a DUI investigation, and Mr. Freitag was arrested after failing field sobriety tests. An open container (mixed drink) was found in the center console and a handgun was in the center console. Mr. Freitag did submit to a breath test on the Intoxilyzer machine with results of .214.”

Freitag was arrested for:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol
  • Driving with an open container
  • Possession of a firearm by an intoxicated person

Freitag was released with a citation and has a court appearance pending in Davis County Justice Court.

Freitag has served as the director of SLC911 since May of 2012. His deputy director will serve as acting director until a replacement is hired.

SLC911 handles an average of 1,635 emergency calls per day, serving both Salt Lake City and Sandy City.

Freitag also has served on the Layton City Council since 2007.
