SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, Oct. 21, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A man has been taken into custody Monday night after an altercation with a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 15.

The incident began a little before 9:30 p.m. when the trooper attempted to stop a pedestrian who was on the 400 South on-ramp.

The man “advanced toward the officer,” said UHP Sgt. Mary Kay Lucas. The man refused to stop at the trooper’s command, instead continuing to approach him very aggressively.

“He knocked the officer’s earpiece out,” Lucas said. “And the officer pressed his emergency button.”

At that point, the trooper’s call for help went out, and other officers who were nearby came to his assistance.

The suspect was taken into custody safely, Lucas said. Medical personnel were on scene, and Lucas said the officer was not injured in the altercation.
