LOGAN, Utah, Nov. 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A Davis County man has been booked into the Cache County Jail on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping.

Jesse Tolman, 26, was booked on charges of:

  • Aggravated kidnapping, a first-degree felony
  • Aggravated assault act committed with force/violence to injure, a third-degree felony
  • Criminal mischief, a class A misdemeanor
  • Intoxication, a class C misdemeanor

Officials from the Cache County Sheriff’s office were called to a Mt. Sterling residence after one roommate heard yelling coming from the other’s room and dialed 911, a probable cause statement says.

The male roommate said he could hear his female roommate telling her boyfriend, Jesse, to leave her alone, then he heard slamming, banging and muffled sounds from his female roommate, as if a hand were over her mouth.

Deputies entered the residence with the male roommate’s permission, and knocked on the bedroom door of the female roommate, who told the officers to come in.

As Deputy Sheriff Cody R. Olsen entered the room and his eyes adjusted to the dark, he said he noticed a man sitting on the bed and a woman standing. Her shirt was torn and bloody, Olsen said in the probable cause statement. Her face had dried blood, and her eyes were bloodshot and watery.

Olsen told the man, later identified as Jesse Tolman, to put his hands behind his back, then noticed a rifle with a scope leaning against the wall about 8 feet away. Olsen and a second CCSO officer, Sgt. Kerr, handcuffed Tolman and double locked the cuffs, both noting a strong smell of alcohol coming from the suspect, the statement says.

The victim told police that Tolman becomes mean when drunk, so she tried to get him to go to bed, but he became physically violent with her, pinning her to the ground and kicking her in the face, stomach and ribs. She said Tolman pulled out “a ball of” her hair and took away her phone.

“She also said he threatened to kill her with the rifle that was in the corner before killing himself,” Olsen’s statement says.

The victim said she planned to escape after Tolman fell asleep.

Tolman was booked into jail, and is being held on cash-only bail of $30,000.
