Police: Suspect arrested after man attacked with golf club in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 5, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect was arrested for aggravated assault Monday evening after what police say was an unprovoked attack on a man, using a golf club as a weapon.

Officers booked Thomas J. Lopez, 35, into Salt Lake County Jail for aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner, false information, resisting arrest and public intoxication, according to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The incident occurred in the area of 141 E. 200 South just before 7:45 p.m., the news release said.

“The suspect struck the victim in the head with a golf club before being subdued by passers-by, including a parking enforcement officer,” the news release said. “The attack was unprovoked and the victim did not know the suspect.

While being photographed by crime lab personnel after he was arrested, Lopez spit on the crime lab technician.
