WEST JORDAN, Utah, Nov. 23, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman is facing multiple charges after police say she intentionally inflicted injury on a child, then assaulted an officer.

Whitney Virginia Romero, 28, was booked on suspicion of:

  • Child abuse — inflicting serious physical injury intentionally, a second-degree felony
  • Assault of a peace officer or military SVC member in uniform, a class A misdemeanor
  • Failure to stop at the command of a law enforcement officer, a class A misdemeanor
  • Interference with an arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor

The charges stem from a Nov. 11 incident, according to a probable cause statement filed by an officer of the South Jordan Police Department.

“The suspect grabbed the child victim and dragged him from the residence by his shirt, which was wrapped around his neck,” the statement says.

“The child was then dragged out onto the sidewalk on 7800 South where officers received several calls. The suspect was choking the child with his own clothes pulling him down the street.

“Officers found blood and vomit on the sidewalk where witnesses advised the child was being choked. The blood and vomit is consistent with the child in distress and being in fight or flight. The child also had blood on his arms along scrapes and cuts consistent with being dragged down the cement.”

A uniformed officer turned on emergency lights and attempted to make contact with the woman, later identified as Romero, the statement says.

“She fled on foot and then actively resisted arrest by stiffing her left arm and locking it under her body,” the probable cause statement says. “I then tried speaking with the suspect and after asking her name she spit towards my face and onto my uniform. The suspect then started kicking the inside of the patrol vehicle and had to be put in a wrap so she would not hurt herself or others.”

According to court records, Romero was out on bail after being charged in September with receiving stolen property, a second-degree felony.
