SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 4, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Southbound State Street between 700 South and 800 South in Salt Lake City was closed Tuesday afternoon when a single car smashed led to a gas meter and forced businesses to evacuate.

Salt Lake Fire Department Lt. Mike Hatch told Gephardt Daily drivers are being urged to use alternate routes.

“We’ve got a single car accident, a 40-year-old female was southbound on State Street and it appears she had some type of medical condition,” Hatch said. “She then ran off the road, up on the curb and hit the [tattoo] business and the gas meter, breaking the gas meter in the process.”

The woman was transported to an area hospital with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The businesses that were evacuated were Sapa at 722 State St. and Big Deluxe Tattoo at 730 S. State St.

There were no injuries to people inside the businesses.

Dominion Energy has shut the gas off in the area and is testing the air for gas, after which the fire department will be able to go in and complete their investigation.

“It’s bad timing because we’ve had to shut down one of the main thoroughfares out of the city, so we just need to let people know to avoid State Street until around 6 p.m.,” Hatch said.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
