WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Sept. 29, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect was arrested after a three-vehicle hit-and-run crash in West Valley City.

A probable cause statement from the 3rd District Court of Salt Lake County said Marcelino DeJesus-Paredes, 21, was arrested Friday and is facing charges of:

  • Failure to remain at an accident involving injury, a class A misdemeanor
  • Open container/drinking alcohol in a vehicle, a class C misdemeanor
  • No valid license– never obtained license, a class C misdemeanor
  • Failure to yield right of way, an infraction

Officers were dispatched to a three-car collision at the intersection of Redwood Road and 3500 South on Wednesday just before 8:15 p.m.

“One driver was injured, and he was transported to Intermountain Medical Center by private vehicle,” the probable cause statement said. “All three vehicles were disabled. The driver of the Silver 2002 Cadillac Escalade was observed by witnesses fleeing the scene of the accident, running on foot. Witnesses insisted that he was DUI (impaired).”

Officers located multiple empty beer cans in the Cadillac Escalade, and beer was spilled on the passenger floorboard of the vehicle. Officers impounded the vehicle and placed a detective hold.

DeJesus Paredes submitted a written statement in Spanish on Thursday, admitting to being the driver of the vehicle. After reviewing the statement, officers contacted the suspect and he went to to the West Valley Police Department Friday afternoon.

“After speaking with him, and hearing him tell me that he was the driver of the vehicle; he expressed his neck/back was injured in the crash, I placed him under arrest,” the statement said. “He was booked into the Salt Lake County Detention Center to properly establish his identity and secure his appearance at trial.”

DeJesus-Paredes’ bail has been set at $2,280.
