DRAPER, Utah, Dec. 2, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) ─ The Unified Fire Department’s Hazmat team is investigating a white powder found Wednesday in the mailroom at the Utah State Prison.

According to Department of Corrections spokeswoman Brooke Adams, the substance was found in the outgoing mail by workers who were processing letters in the mailroom.

“Hazmat is on scene to make sure there is no imminent threat to staff or inmates,” Adams said. “Due to it being in the outgoing mail, we do not feel the substance is anything dangerous, but felt we need to take precautions.”

Unified Fire confirmed two of the workers who came into contact with the powder had to be decontaminated, and Hazmat is working to determine if anyone else was affected by the substance.

Adams said an update would be made if the substance turns out to be anything serious.
