Tense Drama Overnight As Man Dangles From Salt Lake City Rooftop
SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH – July 24, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) –
A tense situation unfolded in the streets of Salt Lake City early Friday morning.
Just after midnight, police responded to 347 S. 300 East to reports of a man throwing objects from an apartment roof top and verbally harassing people headed to the Days of 47 parade route to camp out. Firefighters, police officers and EMTs were called in to safely bring the man down.
The man, who called himself Frankie, was in negotiations with police officers for several hours, making demands for food and drink. At one point he said, “Just give me a joint and a tall boy and I will come down.”
Lieutenant Andy Oblad, of the Salt Lake City Police Department, explained that, “some of the apartments have been evacuated, but he is probably more of a threat to himself, at this point, than others.”
As the negotiations continued, sharpshooters took up positions nearby rooftops, including the YWCA.
Several times through out the negotiations, the man laid precariously on the ledge of the roof top, while officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution.
According to Detective Greg Wilkin, the suspect ultimately surrendered to police. He was transported to a local hospital, where he will undergo a psychological evaluation.
