MILLARD COUNTY – June 14, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah Highway Patrol is looking for answers in a mysterious semi-truck accident on Interstate 70 which claimed the life of a Colorado man.
According to the UHP, 46-year old Deron J. Mason of Wiggins, Colorado died sometime after Friday morning in a crash outside of Cove Fort which went undiscovered for more than 24 hours.
Investigators say they were first notified of the accident around noon Sunday when a family which had stopped by the side of the road spotted the truck’s wreckage at the bottom of a steep ravine.
Troopers say no one actually saw the crash so they’ve been unable to pinpoint exactly when it happened. They say evidence at the scene indicates the driver was likely dead for more than a day by the time the accident was discovered.
Investigators say it appears Mason drifted off the side highway before rolling in the ravine. They say he was not wearing a seat belt and was found pinned beneath the truck.
The UHP also says there’s evidence controlled substances may have been involved in the crash.
Mason was known to have stopped for fuel in Las Vegas Friday morning. He was hauling produce to Denver at the time of the crash.
Deron is a good friend and I would like to keep informed of his accident.
