UTAH COUNTY, Utah, May 17, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — The Utah County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that two people died in the crash of a helicopter in the mountains above Alpine on Friday evening.

The UCSO Search and Rescue team and the Department of Public Safety helicopters responded with an aerial search for the downed helicopter that had been reported as overdue. It had taken off from Ballard in Uintah County and was reportedly heading to the Salt Lake City area.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon, UCSO spokesman, told Gephardt Daily that the DPS helicopter was the first to locate and reach the overdue craft.

Shortly after 8:30 p.m., he tweeted that “the terrain is steep and rugged with heavy vegetation,” and added that the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will be responding to conduct investigations.

Cannon later confirmed that there were two people on board the helicopter and both were killed in the crash.

Their names have not been released pending notification of their family members.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
