SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah, June 13, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A 35-year-old man who was shot following an alleged break-in at a South Salt Lake apartment complex early Sunday morning has been identified by police.
The suspect is Raphael Ames, a resident of South Salt Lake, according to a news release from South Salt Lake public information officer Sgt. Matthew Oehler.
Ames, who was in stable condition after the shooting, has been moved from the hospital and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on one count of second-degree felony burglary. He has not yet been formally charged.
Police responded on a shooting at the Brickstone Apartments at 220 E. 3300 South shortly before 4:30 a.m., the news release said. Information from dispatch indicated someone had attempted to break into an apartment and was shot.
“Ames is still recovering from two gunshot wounds to his right arm, which required surgery,” the news release said.
“Ames entered the apartment in a violent, tumultuous manner. Damage to the front door and a bedroom door was evident, indicating the forced entry before being shot by a male guest who was in the bedroom with the female resident.”
Police have determined this was not a random act, the news release said. The suspect was an acquaintance of the female who rents the apartment. The male guest who fired the shots has been fully cooperating with the investigation and has no connection to the suspect.
The motivation behind the burglary is unknown.
The case will be screened by the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s Office. The DA’s Office will determine if any additional charges will be filed.
Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information is made available.
