WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, July 21, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspect is in custody following the fatal shooting of a woman and the wounding of a teenage boy late Saturday night.

A news release from the West Valley City Police Department Sunday morning said just before midnight, officers were dispatched to a call from a gas station clerk at Holiday Oil, at 3086 S. 2700 West, reporting that a 15-year-old male had entered the store with a gunshot wound to his shoulder.

“As officers arrived and were gathering information from the victim, a vehicle pulled up to the light at 2700 West and 3100 South,” the news release said.

“Incoming officers made contact with the people inside and discovered a 34-year-old woman in the backseat of the vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. Officers attempted lifesaving measures until West Valley Fire arrived and pronounced her deceased on scene.”

Around that time, another call came in from someone who claimed they were being chased by someone with a gun in the area of Valley Fair Mall, the news release said.

Units responded to the area and located Jayson Chase, 38, who gave information that tied him to the initial incident.

“At this time, it appears five people were traveling northbound on 2700 West inside the vehicle, including Jayson Chase, who was a passenger in the backseat,” the statement said. “Witnesses inside the vehicle reported hearing popping sounds coming from the backseat. The two passengers seated alongside Chase in the back seat were shot.”

Evidence also indicates that the driver was shot and wounded, however, this person drove to another location in the area and got out of the car, the news release said. At that time, a different person, known to those in the vehicle, got into the car and set out to drive to a hospital to get help for the woman in the back seat. That second driver stopped upon seeing emergency vehicles at 2700 West and 3100 South and sought help there.

“We have not located the initial driver and have no information that this person sought medical treatment,” the news release said. “The front seat passenger was not hit and has been located. It is unknown at this time what led up to the shooting.”

Chase was interviewed by detectives and is believed to be the suspect in the shooting. Following the interview with Chase, he was booked into jail on several charges related to the shooting to include aggravated murder.

The name of the deceased woman has not yet been released.

Gephardt Daily will follow up on this developing story as more information is made available.
