Utah’s Birdman

Richard Nowak owns The Aviation Sanctuary and Protection Program. He has been running the shelter with his team for five years.

Nowak’s parents bought him his first bird when he was only six years old. He found them fascinating when he was younger and wanted to study them as he got older.

The shelter has almost outgrown its original property. Right now he is looking at purchasing a one acre property so that he is able to build new coops for the birds.

This small sanctuary not only feeds and protects all kinds of birds but Novak and his staff provide medical treatment for any bird that might be injured. Nowak is able to provide triage and basic first aid, such as applying splints and if a bird has an infection he can apply the necessary antibiotics to get them well and back in the air.

Once they are being treated they are quarantined and put on a diet to gain a little weight. If there is a bird that is severely injured they do have a veterinarian doctor who is located in Draper. The vet will look at and provide services’ to the birds if Nowak and his team are unable to administer treatment at the shelter.

Richard and his team do their very best to try and find homes for their domesticated birds. They make sure that the new family of the birds are properly prepared. “We require that the person has previous experience with parrots ‘cause they do live a very long time, so we want to make sure that they are committed to taking on this type of a bird and understand the types of care that they need.”

The struggling little paradise for birds can use your help however. There are many different venues out there that cater just to dogs and cats. But for the birds, especially after Easter, many of them are abandoned and those are the birds that Nowak is seeing more and more of.

They do need support to help feed and house these birds. So if you would like to learn more about how to help or volunteer you can click the link below.
