WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, March 12, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The West Valley City Fire Department was called to a blaze that started in the common wall of a three-unit townhouse Saturday evening, officials said.

Crews were dispatched at 6:40 p.m. to the fire, at 4521 W. 3080 South.

West Valley City Fire Chief Bruce Myler said there was light smoke when crews arrived.

“It turns out the fire was in a party wall between two of the units, and it took quite a bit of time to locate that,” Myler said. “There really wasn’t much actual fire, but some fire was smoldering in between the same party walls that were designed to keep everything quiet.”

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but Myler said there is unconfirmed information that indicates that someone was doing plumbing and was soldering joints with a torch earlier in the day.

No one was injured in the blaze. Some people who went into the structure to assist before firefighters’ arrival were treated on the scene by medics.

Myler said there is approximately $40,000 worth of damage in all. Two of the units affected by the blaze are uninhabitable, while a third unit that was affected is likely to be habitable.

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
