OGDEN, Utah, Aug. 30, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A woman hired to work as a hairstylist for elderly patients of an Ogden facility is facing six counts of exploitation of a vulnerable adult, one count of possession or transaction of a financial transaction card, and four counts of unlawful use of a financial transaction card.
Mary Olwyn Booth, 61, was charged Monday in Ogden’s Second District Court with the seven third degree felonies and four Class B misdemeanors.
Booth was hired in February of this year to work in the salon of Crestwood Rehabilitation and Nursing. Residents would pay for her services — including cutting, coloring, perming and styling their hair — through family trusts accounts managed by the care center, according to court documents.
After she was hired, Booth requested a portable credit card card reader so she could accept payments directly from residents and their family members.
Prosecutors said Booth also turned in logs indicating that five clients wanted her to have tips of $5 or $10, and one name listed was that of a non-verbal client. When the verbal clients were questioned, two said they had mentioned giving her a $1 tip and the other two said they had not mentioned giving a tip of any size.
An investigation also found that Booth had tapped a resident’s credit card for money to deposit into her own account on at least four occasions. The unauthorized charges added up to $213.75.
Court records show Booth has prior convictions in Utah on charges of retail theft, forgery, and exploitation of a disabled or elderly adult.
Booth is being held in the Weber County Jail on $39,000 bail.
What she did is definitely wrong but $39000 In bail for a couple hundred in theft seems excessive?
She should be ashamed of herself. She should get prison time. Dreadful person.
