BENJAMIN, Utah, Feb. 7, 2019 (Gephardt Daily) — A Utah County woman crossing a road after taking out her trash can was struck by a passing vehicle Thursday night.

The accident was called in at about 6:24 p.m., according to information from the Utah Highway Patrol. Troopers responded to the scene, on State Route 147 (also known as 6400 South), near Benjamin.

“When they arrived, they found an approximately 50-year-old female had been hit while crossing the roadway,” the statement says. “Both directions are shut down in the area of 3000 West. The female was transported in extremely critical condition.”

The accident occurred in a low-light area, and the vehicle was traveling at the posted speed of 50 mph, the statement says.

“It appears the female pedestrian had crossed the street to put out her trash can and walked back into the roadway directly in front of the vehicle,” the Utah Highway Patrol statement says. “Troopers believe she may have partially impaired vision and was wearing dark clothing, both of which contributed to the crash.”

There is no evidence to suggest any distraction or impairment on the driver’s part contributed to this incident, the statement says.

“The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators,” an updated UHP news release says. “The pedestrian remains in critical condition at the hospital. Personal information will be released once family members have been notified.”
