WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Dec. 9, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Police arrested a 40-year-old man Monday after he allegedly fired a gun during an argument, causing another person to be injured by shrapnel.
Cory Darnell Summers was arrested for investigation of the alleged crimes of felony discharge of firearm causing bodily injury, a second-degree felony, and aggravated assault, a third-degree felony.
A call came to dispatch on Dec. 6, says the arrest document, filed by a West Valley City Police officer.
“A male called to report he had been shot at and injured in West Valley City on Dec. 5, 2025 around 10 p.m.” the court document says.
“He had gone to a location on the west side of West Valley City where he was in a verbal argument with Cory Summers. He knew Cory Summers as they are in training together. He said Cory took a firearm from the driver’s side of his blue vehicle and pointed the gun at him stating he was going to kill him.
“Cory then fired the small handgun at the ground. Shrapnel from the impact on the ground caused a small injury to the complainant’s leg.”
On Monday, the complainant met with police at the parking lot where the altercation allegedly occurred, “and they located metal jacketing and a hole in the yellow parking lot paint which appeared consistent with a gunshot.”
The responding officer noted the complainant had “a small laceration on his leg just above his cowboy boot. He stated this was from shrapnel.
“Cory was interviewed, he said there was a verbal altercation but said there was no firearm involved at all.”
Summers was ordered held without bail in the Salt Lake County jail, court documents say.
