BERLIN, March 15 (UPI) — A convicted drug dealer died when a bomb exploded beneath his car Tuesday in Berlin, police said.

The 3 a.m. blast in western Berlin’s Charlottenburg neighborhood flipped the vehicle into the air as it traveled toward the city’s center.

The explosion littered the street, the Bismarkstrasse, with debris, police spokesman Stefan Petersen said.

The victim was identified as Mesut T., 43, who prosecutors said had prior convictions for drug dealing, falsifying currency and illegal gambling. Police are investigating whether he was the target of the blast.

While investigators examined the car for the potential of more explosives they urged local residents to close windows and remain indoors.
