COUNCIL, IDAHO – November 3, 2015 (Gephardt Daily) – An Idaho rancher was killed by deputies after an accident involving one of his bulls and another vehicle.

According to Teresa Baker, Idaho State Police Spokesperson, Adams County Sheriff’s dispatchers received a report of an accident involving a vehicle and a bull on US-95 near the city of Council on Sunday at approximately 6:45 p.m

Emergency crews and deputies responded and as they began to extricate the driver and a passenger from the vehicle involved, the bull, which was also injured in the crash, began charging at the first responders and other vehicles.

The deputies had prepared to put the injured bull down when the owner of the bull, Jack Yantis, 62 of Council, arrived on scene with a rifle. “The events that transpired over the course of the next few minutes are under investigation,” Baker said. “At this time, it is believed that two deputies and Yantis all fired their weapons.”

Baker said Yantis was hit by a bullet and died at the scene due to his injuries. One of the deputies sustained a minor injury.

“Our thoughts are with our community and especially all those involved in this incident,” said Adams County Sheriff Ryan Zollman. “The Adams County Sheriff’s Office takes matters involving any use of force very seriously and we have requested detectives with the Idaho State Police to conduct the investigation into this incident.”

The deputies involved have been placed on paid administrative leave while the investigation takes place. Their names are not being released at this time.

The two people involved in the crash were transported by air ambulance to a Boise hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
