Prince Harry Completes 10 years of Military Service, Moves on to New Projects
LONDON, June 19 (UPI) — Prince Harry will serve his final day of active duty in the British army Friday and move on to do volunteer work abroad.
The recently knighted heir served two tours in Afghanistan, worked as an Apache Aircraft Commander and worked with the Australian Defense Force. He earned the promotion to Captain in 2011.
“After a decade of service, moving on from the army has been a really tough decision,” Harry said in March, when he announced his departure. “I consider myself incredibly lucky to have had the chance to do some very challenging jobs and have met many fantastic people in the process.”
Now free from active duty, Prince William‘s younger brother will focus on volunteer work, although he will still have a military presence. He will spend the next three months working in South Africa with conservation experts from organizations like the Zoological Society of London, Kensington Palace says.
He will tour Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania and Botwswana to learn about environmental education programs. He will also travel with rangers and help aid them in their direct conservation efforts against poachers.
Afterward, the prince will volunteer alongside wounded soldiers and veterans for the Personnel Recovery Unit of London District.
